CBT explores the way you think and how to change your thoughts by using different words. Instead of saying "I should", try saying "I need".

Developing a relationship with the client.

Gathering information on their past and the learning mechanics behind the thoughts and behaviours of the situation.

Helping the client to understand their situation.

Explaining how CBT works, using models examples and leaflets.

Helping the client to address their problem by changing their view on their situation, then by their environment, thoughts, behaviours.

Giving ideas for coping strategies, techniques and the like.

Homework should be given between sessions.

Over time both you and the client should see progress.

Old, negative patterns of behavior are explored by therapist and subject leading to the subject gaining some insight into the way negative behavior has a bad effect on how life is lived. Through learning new coping skills, the subject may practice some of the learned skills to make life easier and more adaptive to reality.
