A & B are the line wires from the exchange which connect to the socket and it does not matter if you get them reversed by the way.

They are physically connected to terminals 2 & 5 on the side of the socket where you can connect extension cables to, and it does matter if you get them reversed on that side of the socket.

    Here is a link to a diagram and write up about it;

If you have an older 4 wire type of cable connected to the extension side of the socket the A & B wires on 2 & 5 may be blue and orange with the bell wire on 3 green with the brown spare.

If you have microfilters in all the sockets that are in use then you do not need the bell wire on terminal 3 as they take over its function, so it can be disconnected in order to make your broadband faster by reducing the SNR ( signal to noise ratio ).

    Bt Socket Wiring

    hi monkey

although a BT master socket has 6 wires you only need to connect 2 wires and these are 2 and 5 ... however before modern phones you also had to connect number 3 wire which was the ringer .... this is still connected in many BT master sockets and can affect your broadband speed, however BT released the I-plate which basically by-passed the ringer wire ..

the 6 wires in a BT master socket are as follows

    1) N/A (no connection )

    2) Blue with White Bands ( Speech and Ringing )

    3) Orange with White Bands ( ringer wire )

    4) White with Orange Bands ( Not used but usually connected for neatness )

    5) White with Blue Bands ( Speech and Ringing )

    6) N/A ( no connection )

the above installation method is only compatible with NTE5 master sockets which have a split around 6cm down from the top of the socket with the telephone cable socket on the bottom section of the master socket

also you need to use the specific BT cable tool which pushes the wire correctly into the connectors .... essentially you place the wire in the appropriate connector and push it in with the tool ... this will split the wire in the right place and securely install the wire ..

in summary you only need to use wire ( Blue with White Bands ) into connector 2 ... and then wire ( White with Blue Bands ) into connector 5 ..... then close the master socket....

if you want to install any extension socket then these need to be "Extension (Slave) Sockets" which are different to master sockets due to the absence of ringing capacitor and surge arrrester.

( note : depending on the area you live you may need permission to open the master socket ... so if your not sure then contact your telephone supplier )

    I hope this helps

    good luck mate !
