With synthetic oil, how often do you need to have it changed?

I have a Toyota Prius an some people say 5000miles while others say 10,000 miles-----what say you? I realize this question has been asked before, however, it was years ago. Would like an updated answer.

If your car is under warranty regardless of conventional, synblend or synthetic you go according to the owners manual. If you are out of the warranty period i would say between 5-7000 miles or a maximum of 6 months....personally I am not comfortable with keeping the same oil for 10,000 miles.

Same as for conventional oil. Think of synthetic being more forgiving of going over the interval and you will be on the right track.

Source(s): 40 years maintaining my own cars, synthetic oil for about 15 years

synthetic oils are good up to around 7000 miles or so. after that the additives that is in it will have been used up and the oil will not provide the same protection anymore.

Follow the recommendations in your vehicles' owner's manual.

Contrary to what anyone says, synthetic oils can only hold so many contaminants in suspension.

That being the case, they need to be changed at the recommended intervals in your owner's manual.

Any advice that deviates from your owner's manual can be safely ignored.

I use nothing but full synthetic and I am a bit of a reliability fanatic. I change it every 5000 miles.
