1. Criminology theories have changed over the years, fifty years ago the law would bang a criminal up for commiting a crime and just let him rot. If the criminal was ever violent they would just declare him insane, and then not try to help him overcome his insanity, there was no specific mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia that people really knew about. Now the theory is that people commit crimes because of things that happened in their childhood or mental illnesses, and the law will try and help people reform. Rehabilitation is the way now, not Punishment. In other words, many people believe it's not the criminals fault that he's a criminal, it's the criminals parents or the criminals mental health.
2. In the old days people would be positive about Gangsters, saying that they stick to a so called code of honour, never touching drugs or harming women and children. This is all complete rubbish. The realism is that Gangsters are and always have been (even when the so called "code of honour" existed) mentally unwell people who stop at nothing to get their own way. And if that means smacking a woman around the face, they wouldn't hesitate. Criminals of the old such as "Mad" Frankie Fraser will have you believe that Gangsters of the 50s and 60s "never touched drugs because we didn't believe in them" the reality is that drugs were not available in the 50s and 60s so they couldn't deal in drugs. Though if drugs were available, believe me, the Krays and the Richardsons wouldn't hesitate to get into the drugs trade. In short, realism has replaced positivism by revealing the Gangsters are and always have been vicious and mentally insecure people.
