Gas mileage for a Ford F-150 with 5.0 engine. I have a 96 F-150 with only 63K miles. It has the 5.0?

The truck is an automatic(E40D) XL with standard bed and 2WD. It looks, drives, runs, new but burns too much gas to be a daily driver. I changed the gear from a 355 to a 273 as I don't pull much and it also has a K & N cold-air intake. The intake is run through the air box and does not affect the sensors. It still gets 12 mpg on the highway. No I don't need driving lessons, I got 35 mpg with my Park Ave on a trip recently. Has anyone been able to get any mileage from these trucks, or should it have been a clue when a standard truck came with two gas tanks from the factory. I am going to change the gear to a 308 since it made no difference in the mpg and it currently is geared too high. I have the ability to do these things cheaply. Suggestions please. Sell it to a Ford fan has already been made.

You might want to see if there are any codes in the KAM in the ECU. The 96 F-150 is OBD-II so it should be pretty easy to check. People who have similar trucks to yours that I know get around 14 MPG overall. On the highway you should be able get around 15-16 MPG. Keep in mind that if you go too high on the gearing, the truck will have a hard time holding overdrive on the highway, if the transmission is downshifting at every slight uphill stretch of road you encounter, then that will kill the fuel mileage as well.

Buy a $10 box of "Rocker Arm Pedestal Shims".

    Stick with 5W30 oil.

    195 degree Thermostat.

Replace the O2 sensors, they're tired...Codes present or not.

Put super slick 75W90 fluid in the rear diff.

I'll help/advise you, make/sell you cams, etc. I'm MUCH too busy to baby-sit you for free. I get MANY emails from Yahoo Answers. A few buyers from here, even. That said, I WILL answer a private email or two, but please don't slam me with endless emails asking endless questions or for me to hold your hand. PLEASE don't ask me to pick a cam for you made by someone else. I make and sell cams, not answer "Can you tell me what size and brand of cam to buy" questions. The only answer is "You can buy one from me, I'll make you one". Cam specs are reserved for buyers only, sorry, as I won't do camshaft homework for shoppers who then buy a non-comparable elsewhere. I'm here to help, aim to please, but don't work for free.
