Have you ever been in a public fistfight in Tokyo?
Have you ever been in a public fistfight in Tokyo, or seen one?
I'm writing a novel, and I don't quite know what details to include, but say a street performer "invades" another street performer's turf -- and that resulted in a fight -- I'm guessing if it happened on "the bridge" in Harajuku, the cops would be there pretty quickly (IIRC, there's a police box right there), and would break it up. Would the fighters be arrested, or just warned?
What I want to know is:
1) Who gets in fistfights in Tokyo?
2) What kind of things are at the bottom of the fistfights? Why do people fight?
3) How do by-standers react? Do they stand around and cheer, or do they hustle away?
4) How long does it take before the police get there?
5) How do police act? Are they quite rough? Do they use truncheons? Do they get the crowd to help them pull the combatants apart?

A friend of mine, who is educated at the top university in Japan and is indeed extremely capable, showed up at the office one morning with red swollen face. He said he got his toe stepped on in a crowed train; he dragged out the culprit at the next station and got engaged in a fistfight.
More frighteningly, I have come across a guy who took out a knife on a train and threatened to stab a passenger standing next to him. He was well-clad and in the late fifties. He looked intelligent but was all blue.
My point is: an oridnary person can easily get out of control of himself on a least expected occasion.

Essentially speaking, all your answers is how people would react in many developed countries in the world.
>>1) Who gets in fistfights in Tokyo?
Drunk people
Stupid people
Bad people
Essentially the same people who get into fistfights in your home country , Japan has similar people. The vast majority of crimes in Japan are committed by Japanese, not foreigners.
>> 2) What kind of things are at the bottom of the fistfights? Why do people fight?
Same as answer 1.
>>3) How do by-standers react? Do they stand around and cheer, or do they hustle away?
Most people do not stand around and cheer, but would either run away or call the police. Some stand around and watch.
Same reaction probably found in other places in the world (for the most part).
>>4) How long does it take before the police get there?
Depends on the location, usually standard response times *within a few minutes
>>5) How do police act?
>>Are they quite rough?
>>Do they use truncheons?
It just depends on the nature of the incident. Police would obviously separate the two.
Japanese police are armed with guns but rarely pull them out, they instead pull out expandable police batons, but only when absolutely necessary. Police will generally try to surround the person (using large numbers) and attempt to talk with the person. Again it depends on the severity of the incident to how much force is used or is not used.
>>Do they get the crowd to help them pull the combatants apart?
No that is not standard police procedure.

Research, Research, Research.
Next stop your local police station. Who would know better than them. They may even provide you with information of actual cases if they think you're sincere in why you want the information.
Google "street fights in Japan" and for your previous question "street performers in Tokyo". Collect news cuttings from newspapers which relate to the subject. ( if any ) Browse through your book shop. Lots of information out there. So research and research.
Happy researching.

Most fist fights in Japan are started by American servicemen who have had too much to drink.
Japanese street performers don't have the macho attitude we have here.
Street fights are uncommon in Japan.
