why do they call old dodges mopar?

I always hear this at the race tracks.

    It began with the Crysler/Dodge/Plymouth replacement OEM parts being called Mopar brand. Then evolved to the entire car out here in the public. Once some began calling them Mopar it spread.

    It's Chrysler parts related. My dad had a Plymouth and some Dodges in his lifetime and I also saw Mopar ads in magazines.
