What would be the effects of solitary confinement minus any other forms of torture?

Meaning without other means of physical or mental torture besides just being kept alone with nothing to do for extended periods of time.

    I think you're in the right category. Humans are social animals, which means that if we don't have anything to do besides sit around in a straitjacket in a padded cell, we can go seriously crazy. People even go crazy in normal prison, even if they have cellmates. I once had a dream that I was kept in solitary, and when I woke up I was SO freaked out that I didn't realize I just had a nightmare...
