Is it normal for a gym bag to start to smell just from typical use? Maybe from being in the locker, etc?

I got a whiff of the outside of it today and thought my cats had peed on it.  But I'm really careful never to leave it where they can get it, and nothing inside smelled too bad... couldn't find cat pee evidence anywhere.  But that smell!  Not exactly like cat pee but yuck!  Is it possible that it got this way just from being used, carrying my clean and dirty things, wet towels and bathing suits (inside plastic but still) and not being washed?  It's cloth... a Reebok bag, so I guess it's okay to wash?  Advice?

I would say that if your bag has ever carried any dirty things, or wet clothing, the bacteria has transferred to your bag. As you most likely know, bacteria is what causes smells like sweat so this is quite a common thing. I would just suggest either spraying your bag with antibacterial spray, or washing it with strong disinfectant. Also, heat will kill bacteria so try to tumble dry it if it's not a heat sensitive material. It's not really a health problem, so long as your bag is not too dirty, but it won't get any better in terms of smell without cleaning.

Sure! It's a gym bag after all. You can wash it, but try to air dry it, or put it on the lowest setting of the dryer.

yes it will stink just from carrying damp or dirty clothes. wash it and febreeze it once in a while
