Square BB-to-crank grease?

Normally I'd just use that silvery "anti-seize" stuff that I picked up a bunch of years ago for the calipers on my jeep, I've been using it on everything I can just to get full use out of that stupid bottle-with-a-brush-cap...

I just got a truvativ bb for my winter bike, an old shogun tourer and plan on reusing the old cranks (is this a bad idea? If so, why?), can/should I use this grease at the point of contact or is there something significantly better to use there?

Update:

So I just make sure it's all clean and then bolt it together and torque it to ~300lbs/in?

DO NOT use grease on the taper. You may use grease on the crank arm bolts.

Using grease on the taper will make it surprisingly easy for the crank arm to be overtightened. I had an apprentice at my shop who wasn't being watched, applied grease to the tapers on what was a pretty high end crank, then as he was tightening to torque the crank arm split in half.

I know of plenty of people who, in the course of maintaining their bike at home, applied grease there and eventually experienced problems.

EDIT: YES, make sure everything is clean and take the bolts to torque.

While anti-seize (copper or aluminum based) will work fine, any quality grease will also work and are much cheaper. The key is to develop a solid maintenance routine to protect and lengthen the working life of your bike's parts. Many people never check and replace bearing, chain, and other moving part lubrication until there is a problem. Grease and other lubricants don't last forever and must be checked and replaced with clean product regularly.

Go to Walmart and get a small tub of multipurpose grease. I use it on bearings and about everything else. I would use never seize on bearings it wasn't designed for that.

Paying a little more cash for a better crankset is far more worth it
