Photoshop CS6 "Save as" problem...?

I have a new problem with Photoshop CS6. If I open a file using Camera RAW, and process it as usual, CS6 doesn't want to save it the way it used to. I don't know if I changed something by accident or not.

Here's what happens now: After opening from ACR to CS6 and completinhg all of my work, I choose "Save as..." The save as window opens showing the file name and format. The default format seems to be .PSD. I use the drop down to select .jpg. The file saves normally as a .jpg. When I go to close the image from, I get a new prompt asking, "Save changes to Adobe Photoshop document DSC_xxxx.NEF before closing?

I looked up at the file name in the bar above the work space and noticed that it does NOT change from "DSC_xxxx.NEF" to "DSC_xxxx.jpg" after I have saved the file as a .jpg, but it always used to do that. This adds a few extra steps when closing a document and it really slows me down.

In fact, I wouldn't swear to this, but I think it used to save to .jpg by default, without me specifying this.

I don't see a setting in the preferences for what to use as the default file format for saving, so I don't know where to change it back.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

That's perfectly normal behaviour for CS6 and CC.

Basically Photoshop is reminding you that you haven't saved the PSD (Photoshop document).

When you export a jpeg, it's not a PSD!!! - of course you don't have to save the PSD if you don't want it.

Just leave this behaviour alone, it's useful. One day, you'll be glad Phoshop reminded you to save the PSD.

If your original file is a jpeg, and you just use save, you will overwrite the original file - that's not a good idea.

Normal behavior for CS6, what it's asking you is do you want to save all your editing parameters as a PSD with any Layers you have created and all your setting intact, as well as your Jpeg? The advantage is you can always go back and 'tweak' the settings you used at full resolution and bit depth without having to start and edit that image from scratch. If you select No, the only conversion of that Raw file you have with all the settings you have applied will be the Jpeg file.

It won't save as an NEF file as Raw files are read only and can't be overwritten. The NEF file is the master file with all the image data from the camera, the PSD is the 16bit conversion of that Raw file with all the settings and Layers you applied, Photoshop is asking if you want to save that high bit depth, high definition file as well. Often the answer is yes as there can be a lot of work in converting that Raw file to look the way it does.

The Jpeg file is only 8bit and won't take much re-editing before it 'falls to pieces' and looks terrible.

You can also save as an 8bit or 16bit Tiff file and keep all your settings and Layers too.

try resetting your preferences -- shut down PS, wait 30 seconds or so and try to open it again, EXCEPT this time immediately after clicking to start it quickly press and hold ctrl, alt, and shift (or mac equivalents -- command, option and shift). If PS starts If that doesn't do it for ya, then maybe you should reinstall it -- NOT uninstall and reinstall -- just run the disk or installation file again and it should work like "repair". You shouldn't have to reregister or put in a serial either (at least that's the way it "should" work).

No questions asked, the best site for Photoshop tutorials is: http://www.photoeditinglessons.com/

All tutorials are in video format, which makes them easier for you to follow along with the instructor. The videos are interactive and very easy to follow, this will help you learn piano three times faster. Good Luck!

    Ehm..

A good graphic editor program is GIMP. It works like photshop but it's free. Download it here: http://bitly.com/1zbn9A8

It's a very simple and nice software.
