If you bear in mind who Jesus was speaking to, and the impressions they were under with regard to their standing in the Kingdom of God, you might spot some interesting facts that have a bearing on your question.
He was addressing the common folk, Israelites who were already in the Law Covenant God made with Moses. Jesus gave what we call "the Sermon on the Mount", with his exhortation in Matt. 4 verse 15, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." However, did Jesus REALLY exhort them to change their behaviour?
Was He not actually telling them that they already were in the kingdom if they were conscious of their spiritual need, mourning, meek, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and persecuted because of righteousness? Nowhere does Jesus say, "You must be...." He said "Blessed ARE you...." Their reward was already great in Heaven. They needed to believe it and, in view of that, to repent!
Consider what was preventing the common folk of Israel believing that they had rewards in the kingdom of Heaven. Their religious leaders quite despised them. They called them an accursed brood and kept away from them. They thought the crowds to be ignorant and continually sinning because they kept failing to be meticulous about the minutiae of the interpretations the leaders had incorporated into the Law. They saw themselves as standing at the gates to the kingdom, keeping out the 'unworthy', effectively telling the common folk that the kingdom was closed to them - they could not go in! Jesus told them, "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to." (Mat. 23:13) That's what the people had been enduring for centuries.
Then along came Jesus, mingling freely with all sorts, healing every kind of sickness, blessing, teaching and encouraging them. He told them they were already blessed - they just didn't know it! They were already part of God's kingdom! No Pharisees or teachers of the law could keep them out! They were blessed! They should live rejoicing in that blessedness, not being downcast and hopeless, thinking there was no point in trying.
In view of that, they had to consider their need to repent, because of this nearness of the kingdom of Heaven. The Hebrew and Greek words for repentance mean to think about your thinking and to turn back. Jesus was getting them to think twice, to correct their understanding, and to command them (in light of that) to repent. The gospel message is about repentance and faith, only made possible because of Jesus. We can come, just as we are, and gain entry into the kingdom if we repent. Nobody should be excluded because of Pharisaical judging by others that they are not 'worthy' or not meeting standards WE think they ought to be meeting first! Are we open and welcoming and evangelising the world? Or are we snobbish and not welcoming the outcasts? We are all sinners who need to repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is near. Jesus is the King of that kingdom. We need to trust in Him for He, in His person, is the good news.
All who trust in Him are invited by Him to enter into the New Covenant of grace, for a Kingdom! (Luke 22:20) But people who think they are spiritually strong even though they are NOT in that New Covenant, have utterly failed to grasp the principle of Matthew 5:3.

Jesus was identifying a vital requirement for those who wanted to enjoy the fulfillment of God’s promises—recognize and fill your “spiritual need.” Unlike animals, we have an innate need to understand the meaning and purpose of life. Only Jehovah God can fill that need, and he does so through his Word, the Bible. The Bible reveals God’s purpose for the earth. It tells us why we are here, why there is so much suffering, and what God expects of us. Understanding such Scriptural truths is essential to our living a meaningful and satisfying life. Those who make time to study the Bible and apply what they learn are happy. Why? Because they thereby build a trusting relationship with our Creator, “the happy God,” Jehovah.—1Â Timothy 1:11.

We need to evaluate ourselves regularly
make sure we are in the truth and following the Gods word
We need to be aware or as the Bible say stay awake spiritually
"why is this BIBLE PRINCIPLE is so important ?"
Principles are living, essential truths, and wise Christians learn to love them.
Jehovah inspired Solomon to write: “To my words do pay attention. To my sayings incline your ear. May they not get away from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those finding them and health to all their flesh.” (Proverbs 4:20-22)
Not all things are written down in the Bible; this where "BIBLE PRINCIPLES" come into our spiritual thinking.
A careful study of the Bible reveals that our heavenly Father provides fundamental directives that cover a variety of situations and aspects of life.
He does this with our eternal benefit in view.
That is in line with what wise King Solomon wrote: “Hear, my son, and accept my sayings. Then for you the years of life will become many. I will instruct you even in the way of wisdom; I will cause you to tread in the tracks of uprightness.” (Proverbs 4:10, 11)
The key principles provided by Jehovah have a bearing on our relationship with him and with fellow humans, our worship, and our everyday lives. (Psalm 1:1)

If we do not have a personal relationship with our creator and His Son, we cannot have true peace of mind and heart now and the hope of life everlasting.

If you don't think you need a doctor to cure your cancer, or are not even aware that you have cancer, then you are unlikely to consult a doctor.
Unless you are aware of your spiritual need, you are likely to think that you can get by perfectly well without God or his Christ.

happy are those ignorantly caught up in a belief system for their mind.
the mythical Jesus knew this only too well.
