In my system configuration utility how do I know what programs I want and don't want?

Not being computer saavy, I have no idea what most of the programs are listed on there and I don't want to uncheck something I need.

The simplest way to know which programs you want and which you don't is by looking the program list in the start menu. See, if you need that program or not then, uncheck the ones you do not need. For example if you use your computer for typing you may need programs like MS words (file name winword.exe) If you do not need say MS access then you may get it uninstalled. Also do not forget to scan with an anti-virus from time to time to check whether any harmful program is installed.

If you are unsure of a program, just google about it to know more, if you see it's of no use just get it uninstalled.
