Help with child support!!!?
Ok.. So my mom took custody of my child 6 years ago... I just got a payroll job and I got my third check and a notice in the mail saying I owe child support and they are gonna start to take $241 a month from me... Which they explained its gonna be 65% of my checks! I work at a fast food restaurant part time.. I might see $300 every 2 weeks.. I can't live with them taking so much!!!
Also.. My mother and stepdad since adopted my son.. The adoption went through about 3 months ago... So shouldn't I not be held responsible for anything?!!!
This is ridiculous!!! I am on hold with the child support place here in my state right now.. which is florida.
How can I get them to take less or none at all?? If I owe the past due amount.. That's like 10 grand!!!!
Help!!

You are not responsible for child support once the adoption took place, however you are responsible for the back support. Call the agency that sent the letter and explain to them that they are taking 65% of your check. Perhaps they can lower it as the standard in many states is no more than 50%

Federal law limits what can be taken from your paycheck for this type of wage garnishment. Up to 50% of your disposable earnings may be garnished to pay child support if you are currently supporting a spouse or a child who isn't the subject of the order. If you aren't supporting a spouse or child, up to 60% of your earnings may be taken. An additional five percent may be garnished for support payments over 12 weeks in arrears.
ABOVE COPIED FROM SITE ATTACHED.
You are stuck owing the $10,000 in PAST support that appears you never paid for the past 6 years. Since they adopted your son, only owe till the adoption papers were legal.
At $241 per week, it will take close to 4 years to pay this off.
Why do you think you are not responsible? Those 6 years, they fed him, clothed him, had a roof over his heads. They may have made sacrifices to do this, since you failed to pay them anything.
Until this is paid off, you have no recourse.

You owe ten grand in back child support. That will never go away unless you can get an attorney to help you out. Child support is owed up to the time that your child was legally adopted by someone else.
Good luck

Then get a second job.
You owe the child support up until the time your child was adopted. If you owe $10,000, then that is what you have to pay. Why would you think that your parents have to foot the bill to support your child and you get off paying nothing?

They are going after the $10k that was owed before the adoption.
65% is the max in most states for a person in arrears with no other family to support.

"Shouldn't you not be held responsible for anything" ? That's your child! And obviously they've been providing for years. It's your turn, now that you have a job. I do agree with you that you can't live off of that. You'll have to wait until family court can have a hearing for your case.
