Nissan S13 SX owners?

It's been my ultimate dream to have a Nissan SX fastback (hatch) Special Edition SR20DET for a VERY long time. I actually want to own 2 of them, One for daily driving and one drift monster.

1. What year of S13 is the BEST? I love 1993's

2. How much would I be paying for an SX w/ an SR20DET (USA)?

3. SR20DET, thoughts?

4. Cheap to run/maintain?

5. Reliable? I've heard they're pretty awesome

The s13 is a great car i had one many years ago mine had the ca18det engine in stock. But the sr20det is a great tunable engine and offers impressive power for its engine and a mass of aftermarket parts are out there to add to it .The s13 is a great fun rwd overall and def tail happy which makes it as great platform for a drift car.Is it cheap to maintain yes compared to many cars just look after it with decent oil and other parts and it will keep going.Only prob it does get is the vvt rattle so many go for the J-spec SR20DET.Price wise is not to bad where you live i believe ie less then $5000 but it hard to say as one could be a bargain at a good price while another could be a get rid cheap as it is broken or having problems.

    1. In the US, avoid the 89-90s, as they are a bit more work to put anything else into, since they came with the KA24E. The engine harness is a little different. So 91-93 are fine, and the newer the better, of course.

    2. Depends on who you buy from and what's done. But consider this: You can get the car for $1500, and the engine for $1500. Would you pay $6000 for that? I wouldn't.

    3. Decent engine, I think there's better options for the 240SX, but if you want to go all Nissan it's not a bad way. I'd personally rather use a VQ45DE...

    4. Depends how hard you push it. Keep it close to stock, drive it sanely, tune it conservatively, and yeah, it'll be fairly cheap to maintain and run.

    5. I don't consider any engine with a timing belt to be reliable. Anything that needs extensive repairs scheduled every 60k miles is unreliable, IMHO. But as long as you keep up on those repairs, fix any oil leaks immediately, make sure you only use good gas and such, you shouldn't have too many problems.

EDIT: Oh, and to go off what tricky was saying...I wouldn't buy one that's been swapped already. If you put all your time and effort into swapping the engine and building a project, would you sell it? I wouldn't. That tells me they have some untold motivation for selling, possibly it's a basketcase that never ran right, or maybe they just lost their job and need money for rent. The problem is, you just don't know.
