Landmark Forum California. Is it a scam or just a cult?
I have been pressured, like you would not believe, even blackmailed to sign up with Landmark. The more I have seen what it has done to an old guy I know, who is feeble-minded and now ruined, the more I looked into this organization. I think it is a company that operates just within the margins of legality. I think they are very similar to the scammers that say you have just won a million dollars. Watch the new movie "Nebraska". Brilliant

It is an LGAT, or Large Group Awareness Training company. It is one form of a cult, very destructive and exploitative. I personally use the site below as a tool for information on cults, among many. I hope you have success in learning how to NOT join, and how to help your friend deprogram, since the method of brainwashing is severely implemented. I wish you success, hope it works. Edit: Ah, that's a lot to look up. LGAT's seek to 'Unlock' all the human potential one has. They seek to empower people and give them freedom. The result is a dependent relationship with the LGAT, where they mentally condition you by breaking you down and building you back up through various lessons. It is horrible. Your friend probably has been programmed to be totally biased towards the cult through sleep deprivation, giving very personal information to large groups of Landmark cult members, and being traumatized by lessons involving social ostracism, peer pressure, and emotional abuse. Your friend sounds like a recruiting cog in a machine seeking money, where their only purpose is to volunteer their time and love to the LGAT, for FREE. LGAT's thrive on brainwashed service from their members. The LGAT most likely has its own language, meaning they may not use certain words, invent new ones, and keep Landmark culture very secretive. Manipulating language is a key step in brainwashing, because once the mind uses the cults terms on a regular basis, the person is in the cult without being in the walls of the building. The foremost thing you should not give into is LOVE BOMBING and TRUST exploitation. Don't think because everyone is extremely nice to you from Landmark that they are genuinely good people. They are programmed to be inviting you into the cult, hence Love Bombs. Extra friendly hugs, smiles, passive-aggressive conversations, over zealous. See through that smoke screen. Trust manipulation is basically using your feelings towards your friend as a weapon. "Why won't you join Landmark, don't you trust me, are we not close?" BS! Don't have them use your feelings, and know the cult programmed them to be that way, not your failure as a friend. PM me if you have more questions and found this info helpful.

If you were truly blackmailed you would be calling the police, not posting here. How were you blackmailed?
It's a self improvement group that some people seem to be really sucked into. I lost two friends to it and they no longer associate with anyone who is not a member of Landmark. They have left their old friends and family members because they refused to join up and pay money.
I went to one of the weekends and it wasn't for me. You could get the same thing out of any self help book for $15 as you can paying for a weekend seminar. I only went to get my friend to shut up as he was harassing every friend, co-worker, family member, etc to go. I never saw what the hype was all about or understood why people get almost addicted to it. I went in with an open mind but found it laughable in parts. Because I wouldn't continue with it, my friend stopped talking to me. He moved across the country with a girl he met there and has no contact with his family because they would not go to seminars.
My boss's ex husband is really into it. He hasn't paid her a penny of child support in the past 2 years but he has no problem coming up with $1500 to attend various seminars. If it were really helping someone to become a better person, don't you think someone would have told him that his first priority should be supporting his two kids instead of going to another seminar? And that he shouldn't come back until he has paid back all of the back support he owes and is paying his child support?
I'm sure some people get something out of it, but it's like any religion or self help guru like Tony Robbins. Some people really get into it and pay loads of money, and others don't and think it's a waste of time and money
I've had to do so many professional development courses at work so Landmark did not tell me anything I had not already heard hundreds of times before. It's basic self improvement - nobody but you will look out for you, successful people surround themselves with other successful people, don't be afraid to set goals and follow your dreams, focus on your strengths, communication is key, etc.

From my observation, it is in between a pyramid scheme and a cult. Pyramid scheme because of the lure of making money by individual members and cult because of the increase of prestige and power that the members achieve by hooking in new members.
I have seen one old senile guy sucked in and then manipulated, used and milked by a person, who is "successful" with Landmark. She used Landmark for her own gain at the expense of an old senile guy.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I forget the site, but if you Google something like "cult busters" or something like that, there is a comprehensive site out there that deals with every recognizeable cult- and gives details.
