An atom is made of protons and neutrons in the centre (called the nucleus) and electrons which surround the atom outside the nucleus.

Atoms with different numbers of protons are different elements.

However two atoms can be different and still be of the same element if they have a different number of neutrons (in which case it's called a different isotope) and if the number of electrons is different (in which case it's called a different ion).

    Hope that helps :)
