big back yard ~4000 square feet. dirt is okay; will need to till and top soil on some low spots.

Hi Chris,
I'm pretty sure that ANY TIME is the RIGHT TIME in San Diego! My parents used to live there and I don't believe there was ever a too hot or too cold time, even during the dog days of summer. Regardless your climate, a mixture of grass seeds will probably serve you best, the mixtures meant to survive and thrive through a wide range of temperatures and conditions. Have fun! That is a HUGE backyard!

With your weather, I would guess anytime would be OK. My daughter lives there and loves the weather. She's visiting here in Dallas and freezing.
