Are you talking about he Windows profile password or the system CMOS password?
A lost Windows password can be reset by using a free recovery solution found here: http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
It is slightly tricky to use and you do need to create boot media such as a CD or flash drive but it is one of the best methods available, and it is free. There are also many YouTube videos that address the subject.
If the machine stops and asks for a CMOS password before it starts Windows you have a much bigger problem on your hands. You will need to contact the laptop manufacturer and see if they provide instructions for clearing CMOS passwords. CMOS passwords are put in place as an option to destroy the usefulness of a stolen laptop and are very difficult if not impossible to clear without the help of the manufacturer, and you will very likely need to provide proof of ownership to get assistance. Some Dell system boards can be reset with a procedure and a code obtained from a third party for around $30 but this is not the case with many other makes of machines.
Good luck!
