Stereo receiver and turntable recommendations for JBL S38ii speakers?
I have a pair of JBL S38ii speakers and a powered JBL Subwoofer. I'd like a stereo receiver to go with these speakers. The speakers are labeled 175 watts and 8 ohms. Does this mean I need a 175 watt receiver or a 350 watt receiver (175x2)? Also looking for a turntable to go with this setup. Any recommendations on receivers or turntables that will work?
Thanks!

Does this mean I need a 175W receiver? No, what it suggests is that your receiver (amplifier) should not be more than 175W (per channel).
What receiver should you buy? I can't give you a specific model or brand but I can give you some specs that you should look for to ensure that the receiver you will pair nicely with the speakers you have.
JBL states 8 ohms on the speakers but if you check the Stereophile review for the speakers the measurements show that the speakers dip down to 4ohm. So you should ensure that the amp (receiver) you buy has speaker binding posts for 4 ohms.
In regards to power, I would look at something around 75 to 100W (into 4 ohms). This will depend on how loud you would like to listen and how big your room is. The farther you are from your speakers the more power you will want. But don't get to fixated on power ratings as these vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and some mid-fi companies use some sneaky tactics, like rating their amps as 100W, but that is for 5 channels or 20w per channel. The one thing you want to be sure of is that there is sufficient power to ensure that the amp doesn't clip as this can destroy your speakers.
AS for the sub, you will want to be sure that there is an RCA out for you sub.
Also note that a solid state amplifier rated 100w into 8 ohms will generally deliver close to 200w into 4 ohms and 400 into 2 ohms. This depends again on the manufacturer, but be sure to get the rating into 4 ohm.
As for the turntable, you will want to ensure that the amp you buy has a phono section (moving magnet) built in, as this will avoid you having to buy a separate phono pre-amplifier.
Now the big questions:
How much do you want to spend?
Do you want to buy new or used?
I would stick to brands such as Marantz, Cambridge, Nad.
