Charge for missed appointment - UK question?

Is there any mechanism to charge a tradesman and/or their agent for my wasted time if they fail to turn up for an agreed appointment?

I ask having taken an afternoon off fruitlessly....

Only if you can prove you lost money as a result of them not turning up. Just taking time off from work does not always count, unless it was unpaid, you would need documentation from an employer that you lost money due to them not turning up.Then you can have a go at billing them for your lost wages!

what kind of appointment? like you're a contractor? Shouldn't you be meeting at their home? Why not get it on tape that they choose the day and time you two should meet, therefore if they back out without calling ahead (for doctors here it's 24 hours ahead notice) then they can get dunned for not appearing, but all you'd have for court is a tape recording and that may not hold up in court enough for you to get paid.

the other way is to increase the costs of those who do take on your services to pay for your lost hours from the guy before them who didn't show up. Or, if that original guy calls again and wants your services, tack onto their bill your time from the initial appointment which was a no-show.
