What do you think of career waiting and bartending?

I recently met a few waitresses at one restaurant in my town who served for a living. I know that on paper, waiters and bartenders make less than minimum wage because they receive tips, but I’m wondering how they make a living on that alone.

Is it practical? Have you ever met anyone who has waitressed or bartended for a living, with no other job?

If you are a good server/bartender, you can make a couple hundred bucks a night, and even closer to $1000 on weekends. It can be very profitable if you are good at it, and if you enjoy it.

It is completely false that any tipped employee in the USA is making "less than minimum wage". That is WHY it's called "minimum wage": working for less would be illegal. If you're expecting to get rich in a minimum-wage job, you have a seriously distorted view of the economics. Even if you were to work full-time at $7.25 an hour, your annual pay is less than the poverty level.

If more people simply stop paying any tips, the problem will rapidly escalate, laws will change and people in the service businesses might actually get paid a decent living wage.
