Why did Britain suppress the Quit India Movement in 1942?
1942 was a pretty grim time for Britain in the war against the Axis powers. Yet despite all of its losses it found enough British soldiers to suppress the Quit India Movement. And for what? Only a few years later Britain would recognize India and Pakistan as independent nations. I hope someone who can explain the logic here.
For the record, I am an American and I am pretty ignorant of British history.

The British had the support of the Viceroy's Council (which had a majority of Indians), of the Muslims, the Communist Party, the princely states, the Imperial and state police, the Indian Army, and the Indian Civil Service. Many Indian businessmen were profiting from heavy wartime spending and did not support Quit India.

Suppression is excessive perhaps, UK struck a deal with the Nationalist mainstream - India would help until the war was won. Then UK withdrawl was on the cards and pretty sharpish. Quit India was Japanese funded and inspired,

When looking at the map below, remember Burma was part of British India at the time.
