Why do we Americans still think we have a 2 party system?

There were other political parties in America before the Democrats or Republicans came along. Abraham Lincoln was elected as a 3rd party candidate. At the time the Republican Party was a new 3rd party. So how/when did we let the Democrats and Republicans convince us that this is a 2 party system in which we have to choose between their 2 pre-approved candidates in every election? We argue about whether the Democratic or republican candidates are the better choice but truth be recognized - neither choice is EVER good for the country. Both candidates have been pre-approved and nominated by the leaders of the 2 parties. The truth is - neither party deserves anyone's support. Neither party has done anything significantly good and lasting for the people who support them in over 50 years.

there were actually 4 candidates in Lincoln's election but it is usually the leaders of party that walk out and form their own party when the don't like their candidate so the people don't have the power to run another candidate and the leaders are set on keeping themselves in power so they are to stubborn to change their views (IE the govt. shutdown)
