Atheist Church? Atheist Congregation? What is it?

I just read(in another question) that there is an "atheist megachurch". I googled and saw that it does, in fact, exists. So, to save me the research, is anyone willing to tell me a few things about this?

It sounds as ridiculous as the "spaghetti monster", but perhaps I'm judging too harshly. Is it as ridiculous as it sounds? Or is it some "Church of Reason" or something similar?

I've broken my record for questionmarks in a single question. Cheers!

They don't call it a church, the people who wrote the article made the association between their meetings to celebrate their atheism and churches. It is meant to be a way for atheists to be together and hang out with other people who aren't going to push religion on them the way many churches do/have done to many of them. It isn't supposed to be a parody, just some writer misinterpreting a meeting for a religious church (which it will never be since churches are for praising a god or gods and atheists do not believe in any gods).

This is nothing like pastafarianism and the Flying Spaghetti Monster (though I know people who will swear on their lives the great beast and his noodly appendages are just as real as any gods or lack of gods).

For people who have no faith and lack a belief in god or Gods, but enjoy the community that Churches have.

A Churchy atmosphere without the religion.

Also for the people who say they are spiritual but not religious.

Plus, I daresay, people are probably really happy to find a place where it's OK to be atheistic, and be surrounded by others who share your non-faith. Dealing with the pervasiveness of religion is pretty oppressive.

Personally, I think it sounds ridiculous, but I figure it's something like this --

Many people like the Church experience -- singing, community, hearing inspiration messages. However, many of those same people also think that the supernatural aspect of religion is ridiculous.

Thus, atheist churches, to serve the community needs of a church without the whole "you have to believe this specific line of supernatural dogma while denying other nearly identical forms of supernatural dogma" thing.

A false, baseless accusation by a bunch of crazy religious people that tries to bring atheists down to their level. You can't believe everything that is written on the internet, otherwise you would have fell for the 2012 bullcrap.
