my colleagues 2003 lancer is on 4G13 1.3L engine. from start, the check engine light stays on and the car drives heavy. sometimes it just goes away and then it drives just fine. what are the possible reasons i should ask him to check/test?

There are about 600 trouble codes that can set off the Check Engine light. Don't ask us to list all 600 possible reasons.
Tell your colleague to get the computer scanned and then you'll know exactly what set it off. That's why car makers developed trouble codes--to eliminate guessing
