French Horn Newbie???

I just started playing the french horn a few weeks ago after my freshmen band class needed a french horn. I switched from trumpet, so it was easy for me to pick up. The only issue is with my embouchure. I use my bottom lip a lot more than my top, even though I know that's not how you are supposed to do it. I can still hit the higher notes pretty easily, and it was the same way I played my trumpet (I was first chair). Should I try to fix that or is it ok if I don't? Thank you!!

Update:

If I do need to change it, what is the best way to approach that? Thanks

As you indicated in your question, trumpet players, in general, use a little more bottom lip in the mouthpiece than the top, and horn players do the opposite - more top lip and less bottom lip. However, mouthpiece placement can vary from player to player. If your present embouchure is allowing you to play a good range, with a characteristic sound and dynamic control, then I would say don't mess with it.

You might, over time, try to adjust it upward a bit making certain that you don't mess up your playing. Remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix it !!

I would suggest that you get a copy of "The Art of French Horn Playing" by Philip Farkas. He has a whole chapter on French horn embouchure with pictures of different professional players demonstrating their embouchures on an open horn rim.

Good luck with your new instrument.
