How can i put my new iphone on my data plan?

My iphone broke so my friend gave me his old one that no longer has a plan, how can i switch this iphone onto my plan to replace my old one? (I have at&t)

    Transfer the SIM card from your iPhone to your friend's iPhone. The SIM card slot is usually on the right hand side of the phone.

    the only way to do it is to go down to AT&T and talk to them about it.
