Can you recommend some moderately advanced Spanish literature to start with?

I'm quite fluent speaking and understanding Spanish, and can read everything I need at work, newspapers, websites, etc, but I have never actually read a book in Spanish. So I don't want to start with Cervantes, you know. I'd like to read something light and funny, touching, or a little scary or tense is ok. I prefer contemporary over ancient. I'm asking about fiction or true stories or novels for adult readers. So if you know a few to recommend to get started, let me know. It shouldn't be too simple, but I also don't want to have to get the dictionary out in every sentence. Thank you!

I would suggest the Spanish Bible.La versión Reina Valera. It has excellent Spanish and you probably can get one for free. I use it to open our services at church every Sunday.
