Christians: If total faith in God's will, why do you bother looking when crossing the road?

Surely, if it is God's will whether you live or die, you just need to trust Him totally and walk straight ahead? Let me know how your experimenting goes. No peeking!

Update:

Hog Warsh - I will take looking over not looking, but the decision is mine, and the responsibility is mine. I am not religious, so I don't accept at all some god makes decisions or has plans for me. What about all the other 2,700 plus gods?

Update 2:

Star - how do you know how God works? Special friend?

Update 3:

Cera Gwendolynn B - It is called the natural instinct for survival. The underpinning of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Animals don't believe in god, but manage to stay alive mostly by looking where they are going rather than emotionally investing in daddy in the sky to keep them safe.

Update 4:

Y - I heard Mohammed was a Zionist plot to disgrace Islam. :)

Update 5:

Bruce - totally misunderstood the point - if it is God's will you will stay safe no matter whether you look or not. So why bother even looking? God's will is paramount, after all.

Update 6:

Bruce - sorry mate - that isn't history. History is tangible.

Update 7:

TANGIBLE - perceptible by touch.

"the atmosphere of neglect and abandonment was almost tangible"

synonyms: touchable, palpable, tactile, material, physical, real, substantial, corporeal, solid, concrete;

If God wants us to carry out his work of building up the kingdom here on earth, he wants us to stay alive and healthy as a necessary condition of doing this work. Looking when crossing the road keeps us alive and healthy.

As a historical example, Jesus took care to avoid his enemies where possible. He could not have proclaimed the good news if he were killed too soon.

    Cheers,

It's like asking: Why don't you pray to God when you want your next can of beer out of the fridge?

The answer is obvious. We are beings that belong to the earth and we are created as individuals to live individual lives. God isn't a maid that does everything possible thing you want, every single second, that's not his purpose, that's not the nature of our relationship with him... It states quite clearly that Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. But more importantly, it says even all the way back in Genesis for example: "You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed."

We are called to live by faith, that's true. But we are also called to invest our own efforts, and energies, and reason into our lives, this idea that God should be our constant nanny who bows to our every demand is actually completely contradictory to biblical doctrines. Living by faith, does not mean casting aside your common sense. There is nothing Biblical about the concept that God should do everything for us. The things that we can do ourselves, we are called to do ourselves. In fact we are called to suffer with Christ, nothing takes more effort than the endurance of suffering. The bible says nothing about all things being delivered on the silver platter, quite the opposite in fact =]

  • We are also called not to put God to the test and to move in Spiritual Wisdom

To take your example suppose we decided that we will walk in front of a car what about the welfare of the other persons who might become involved in an accident.

We shall not put God to the test!

If you really can't cross the street due to a physical disability, He will be there to assist you, that's for sure ... Although God is distinct from His creation, all His creation exists within Him. In Acts ... He is our ever-present God, Saviour, Lord,

(Matthew 4:5-7) Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Don't drive on the other side of the road... to test Him?

(Just my point of view) God isn't driving the car, God won't stop me from crossing a road without breaking the free will code. God won't press the break peddle without breaking the free will code. God won't change my whole day to avoid that accident without breaking someones free will code. God gave me life as a gift, so I'm not going to be stupid enough to throw it away so easily.

Well no god doesn't work like that

Except when someone survives an accident or disaster, or if a doctor saves them. Then its god

I think I got that right

Guess I was too heavy with the sarcasm... :/

Yawn! I can't believe anyone with even limited intelligence would ask such a foolish question.

God created man with free will and common sense. Use it or not. It's not Gods will that we die. Satan did that.

Hello Langleyo, here is a simple analogy from the Islamic viewpoint.

One day Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it and he asked the Bedouin, “Why don’t you tie down your camel?” The Bedouin answered, “I put my trust in Allah.” The Prophet then said, “Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah” (At-Tirmidhi).

You'd think Christians would live a lot more dangerously since they believe in heaven. Yet, they still fear death.

-edit- I know, I just find it funny.
