Due to labor laws, there are not a lot of jobs for high school students so yes, McDonald's is a great first job. You will learn responsibility, food safety, humility and time management. Jay Leno, Macy Gray, Sharon Stone, the guy who stated Amazon.com all worked for McDonald's in their early years so you never know what you'll achieve.

Any job is a good first job for high schoolers. I'm 15, almost 16, and I got a job at our local gas station a few months ago. Sure I only stock coolers, and it takes me a few hours a night, but it's still a good first job to get someone ready for the job world. You could see if any local gas stations are hiring for something like that.

At 17, you might have better options. You could try retail, maybe one of your favorite stores (fashion, or Electronics) You can also try to get a job as a server. Some restaurants will ask for experience, but other restaurants are willing to train their employee's. As a server, you could potentially make good money in tips. If not a restaurant, you can try to get a job in a catering/banquet facility. Cater waiters, usually earn a higher hourly wage, but they do not make as many tips.
There's nothing wrong with McDonalds, if that is what you prefer, but I think you will earn more if you choose something other than McDonald's. Plus, if you work at McDonald's, your cloths will smell like McDonald's, and you will end up eating a lot of McDonald's...

Publix is good if your under 16 but when your 16 you can apply to almost any resturant. Try going for Taco Bell or maybe Chick-fil-a

Its not a sure thing but many folks start their working career in fast food. Believe it or not, the managers get decent money and good benefits.
