Oven elements showing red hot, normal?

Oven elements showing red hot, normal?

Visiting my son in the USA I looked into the oven in his rented apartment, only to see elements at the very bottom of the oven glowing red hot.

He say this is normal in USA, is it ?

Update:

Sorry, should have explained further.

I would have thought if elements were supposed to glow red hot then a cover would be fitted over them to deal with any spillage. I am familiar with elements glowing red hot, but in UK only the tops and sides of ovens have such elements, never the bottom uncovered, which is why I really wanted to know should there be a cover fitted over them?

These elements are open to any liquid being split and would present a touching hazard to unwary fingers.

That's what oven heating elements are supposed to do. The oven elements are controlled by the 'oven' knob on the stove. The oven is used to bake things in.

It is normal everywhere. That is how you pre-heat the oven to your desired temperature.

When the set temperature is reached, both will shut off.
