What Would happen in this situation?

What would happen in this hypothetical situation?

The Indians recently extended a qualifying offer to Ubaldo Jimenez, who took no time rejecting it, which means he has a draft pick tied to him. What would happen if the Indians offered him a contract, and he signed back with the Indians? What would become of the draft pick?

Nothing. The pick is compensation in the event that he signs with someone else. I suspect the Indians didn't expect him to sign and made the offer only so they'd get something for him if he doesn't return.

Absolutely nothing only works if another team signs him. Say he went to the Mariners then the Indians would get the Mariners draft pick.

Well you surprised me. I didn't know Jimenez is a Class A free agent. The Indians would then lose their first ruin pick in the upcoming draft because they didn't finish in the top 10 for most games lost.

Source(s): The mets and Bourn situation last year. Mets debatably finished 10 amongst most losses but pirates got the 10 qualifying spot somehow

Nothing. The draft picks come into play when a different team signs him.

    Nothing.

The Indians would effectively be taking a draft pick from themselves, meaning... nothing changed.

Nothing. You can sign you own free agents with no extraneous strings attached.
