what would be a great book for a 7 or 8 year old to read?

I want to give me niece a great book for Christmas. I'm giving her sister Judy Blume's "Are you there its me Margaret". It was always my favorite. I need another great join but for someone just a little younger.

"Little House in the Big Woods' by Laura Ingalls Wilder. She's writing about when she was about five or six, herself, so it's written for a younger reader than some of her later books. Great illustrations, too. Gives a lot of insight into the day-to-day life in the nineteenth century.

Um... Have you heard of Diary of a Wimpy kid? They are fun to read, and sort've 'comicky'(but still has lots of writing) Or Dork Diaries... one Diary of a Wimpy Kid is about a boy, and Dork Diaries is about a girl. The Tale Of Desperaux is a really good one to. It is about a mouse who can read, and it is about a rat who likes sunlight. Really interesting. Used to be one of my favourites
