How often should you wash a puppy?

I read so many things on puppies and now I'm confused to how often we should actually wash puppies & dogs.

We just adopted this lab X Kelpie, who is 11 weeks old now and appears to have dry skin so obviously I want to avoid making it worse for him but his coat doesn't smell very great at the moment.

According to a dog shampoo (aloe vera, oatmeal & coconut oil is the main products in it), it says do not wash on puppies under 12 weeks but according to this anti dandruff product, it says once every three weeks (no age restriction), however it does say wear gloves which makes me feel a bit concern that there may be harsh chemicals in this product.

Is there any suggestions?

Update:

I'd like to point out that I only had this puppy for over a week now and I'm betting the skin condition was from being in a rural dry area as he was adopted from a farm.

I am currently following the guidelines on the puppy food bag as it states 2-3 meals a day for his weight

If you just adopted the dog keep in mind that it was probably under a great deal of stress and/or on a poor diet before you got it.

I would say bathing the puppy once when you bring it home is fine with a very mild puppy shampoo but DO NOT use a harsh dandruff shampoo.

Brush the puppy often and do not bathe again. Evaluate the skin after 2-3 more weeks to see if there is improvement. Bathing too often or with harsh shampoos can make skin even worse. If it does not smell then do not be too worried, like I said, keep brushing often though as this will be good for the skin and also so he/she gets used to being handled.

Most of the time a wet towel will wipe off any dirt he/she gets on him from being outside and a full bath isn't required. I have a lab and a shepherd who only get bathed 2 times a year. The rest of the year they only get wiped with a towel if they get too dirty and they get brushed at least twice a week, sometimes more during times of heavy shedding. Neither of them have skin issues though, but you won't know if your puppy really has an issue you need to worry about for a few more months yet. I'm willing to bet it's just stress/growing skin/or poor diet that is causing the flakes, not an allergy or skin problem.

I think vets would recommend once a month as puppies should not have skin follicles damaged further as they are still growing and at quite a vulnerable stage. However if you take them to the forest or they get dirty somehow, one bath out of this schedule won't hurt them and if the dirt is visible, the dog may get a disease and should be washed as soon as possible. I would say the next time you book an appointment with your vet, you could bring up the shampoo you are using or maybe buy their shampoo as they will most likely have soothing shampoo for dry skin and for the age group of your dog. I've never heard of using gloves though, this may just be for the shampoo to soak into the dogs coat and not your fingers but I would ask the place you bought it or the vet if you have doubts or questions. In my opinion, I think your puppy would be fine as long as the shampoo didn't touch their mouths, aloe vera gel is safe but make sure it doesn't have latex in it (which it shouldn't anyway) and coconut oil and oatmeal is what I use to bathe my dog. I would check just to be sure (^ ^) Hope I answered your question

I have never done all this bathing with my hounds. Going out in the rain and needing a good towelling down usually takes care of any need to be regularly bathing, unless they happen to roll in something obnoxious! Bassets can become a bit houndy, and occasionally mine do need freshening up - I use a medicated shampoo, and when I was showing them, something like Ring 5 Black Out (for my dark ones) but even when campaigning them, I limited the number of full baths they had. It's too easy to strip the natural oil out of their coats.

On the other hand, my Whippet has had a handful of baths in the 5 years we've had her. She doesn't smell and is very clean normally. A daily brush out, for both of my current hounds, is plenty enough, coupled with a good quality food - good skin and coats come from within after all.

I'd suggest you give your puppy a good brushing on a daily basis and see how his coat/skin improves. Puppies coming from a good breeder should smell sweet, and healthy. If your pup does need a bath because he's smelling 'kennelly' then use a specifically puppy shampoo. But I'd try the brushing first - coming to a new home is stressful enough without needing to put him in the tub!

Poms can be very high or low maintenance depending on your personality... You can wash a pom puppy about once every couple/three weeks or so and be just fine. If you want the "puffy pom" look, this will require DAILY brushing. As pups, poms are EXTREMELY delicate, but surprisingly resilient. I know that sounds strange, but they are. This is one of the most fun breeds you can possibly own. They can be trained not to be yippy by providing constant attention when they are little. This will pay big dividends when they get bigger (7 lbs) and get a little more bold. no one wants a yippy, dominant dog running around. Socializing with another dog is also a good idea. This is why people say poms are best in pairs...but it doesn't have to be two poms, it can be two different breeds. I have socialized baby poms with dogs as big as elkhounds with no problem. I digress, every couple weeks or so, answers your question

I just brush my dog and he has a good bath about twice a year . They dont stink if you get all the old hairs off with a brush . My dog gets wet a lot anyway as he loves walking in the rain , so he gets a good rub down with a clean towel most days . It depends on the dog . When I do wash him its with my own Pantene gentle shampoo !!

Ask your vet instead of trying to PLAY one. You need to know if the shampoo is safe (not IMO if you are advised to wear GLOVES) and why the dog has dry skin (perhaps poor diet) which is NOT normally treated or EVER made BETTER - by washing said dog.

Use dry shampoo for dogs on him till he hits 12 weeks. better safe than sorry. Or grooming spray. I used Kiehl's cuddly coat grooming spray which neutralizes bad odor. I was allowed to bathe my puppy once a week 48 hours after her 12 week shots.
