nyc after new years day?

My family is travelling to westchester after christmas for about a week. Not interested in being in the NYC for new years eve, but thinnking of visiting some museums touristy stuff later in the week. Can anyone tell me what its generally like after new years? Im aware millions of people gather for the times square stuff, but kind of hoping it will empty out the days following. We will probably drive into the city.

After New Years things calm down. The Christmas buying rush is over, as is the tourist rush to visit the city. The tree in Rockefeller Center stays lit until January 7. The weather will likely be cold and windy with the threat of snow.

As for driving into the city--bad choice. Parking is extremely expensive. If you're in Westchester County you'll have easy access to the Metro-North commuter trains.

Everybody is back to work. The holidays are over. It is like nothing even happened. You see all of the Christmas trees out at the curb. Most places wouldn't be too crowded then.
