1. Gender roles repressed women. If you were a woman, you had less opportunities to advance, you couldn't own land, you couldn't vote, etc. So if you were born a female in the old days, you were pretty much screwed.
2. Women's Suffrage, feminists, more prominent females gaining media attention.
3. Historically? I'm not sure.
