IMFs or intermolecular force affect the state of matter as shown by water. Water has a higher boiling point than most liquids. Why? Because hydrogen bonding keeps the molecules closer together and more energy has to be used to overcome these bond. Kinetic energy on the other hand is the speed that a particular molecule has. As kinetic energy increases, the molecule will have enough energy to escape from the liquid (if its initial state is a liquid) and become a gas molecule. On the other hand if kinetic energy decreases the molecule slows down to the solid state (which has little movement).
