I'm having lower back muscle spasms, what should I be doing?

I've had lower back muscle problems for years. Last year the doc said I had a sprained back. Since my doctors never give me a straight answer based on my condition, I'm going to ask yahoo answers to give me the best advice. I had some spasms today that doubled me over and knocked me to the ground. I felt like my lower back muscles just gave out completely for about a second. What should I be doing to heal. I've never completely regained full use of my back for the last 20 years since my original injuries. But what should I be doing now? Rest only? Heat? Combination of heat and ice? Exercises? My chiropractor told me that I'm supposed to do these upper torso twists, about 600 per day. But I feel like the muscles are giving out a lot now and seem more unstable. I'm not sure if this is an unstable phase and will pass or if I'm just making myself worse with these exercises at this time. Please help if you know the issues I'm dealing with. 10 points to the most complete answer!

Bren, so sorry to hear about your back.. The muscle spasms you're having sound excruciating. The first thing I suggest is you quit those exercises right away and completely rest.. I say this because your body is obviously already stressed out and you don't want to make it worse..I think you must have recently strained it to have a flare up like this. The muscles in your back literally need a break from house work, bending, lifting (whatever) I'd take out a heating bad and rest up. The muscles are probably inflamed so try some anti-inflammatory's like 800mg Ibuprofen & talk to your doctor about being prescribed flexeril that's a very commonly used muscle relaxer for muscle spasms. 600 torso twists sound like torture! I think you would be better off with some small stretches and little reaches just do what you can, listen to your body and rest. When you start feeling better you can look into some more physical therapy but yeah, don't stress something out that's already stressed out. Feel better!

see another doctor, perhaps a specialist.

the back is not something you want to guess on, or have an armature work on it. even professionals screw up backs when working on it.

the back, legs and abs are all connected and work together, when one is weak they are all weak when one is strong they are all strong.

work on stretching your legs this will intern stretch your lower back. you want to do light stretching and not over do it. strengthening your abs will help strengthen your back muscles and again you want to do this gradually and over time and not over do it. 600 torso twist a day is too much to jump right into, you need to easy into this, even 50 a day might be too much, i would start off with 25. and 5 situps. and slowly build up. if your injury gets worse then do half of that. if it doesnt then slowly build up added a few more every few days or weeks, depending upon how it goes. again dont rush it or push it too hard too fast.you are better off taking it a lot slower then going to fast and making it a lot worst

drink plenty of water, and make sure you get enough protein. look into your diet more carefully. the water helps muscles and is required by them. often we dont drink enough and the muscles will be effective. i really dont recommend masking the pain with pain killers. pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. you need to figure out how to correct it.

First check alternative healing websites for dietary changes you can make. Usually too much calcium and not enough magnesium is a problem. Do a full body cleanse ie. colon liver and kidney. Remove toxins from body by eating more raw veggies and fruits. There's a product called magnesium oil that you can spray right on problem area. It with my muscle and joint pains

I would recommend heat and ibuprofen. Cold is generally useless with muscle contractions.

The torso twist are good, but perhaps cut down on how many you do. Muscle fatigue won't solve anything.

It is a fact that no one condition reflects sciatica and it would be prudent to refer to it as a generic medical term encompassing lots of symptoms that taken together describe a lower back pain that a patient suffers from. When someone complains of severe back pain that passes down to legs through his buttocks, even down to his feet and toes, doctors suspect him to be suffering from sciatica. Often sciatica presents itself as numbness or a tingling sensation that may not be anything like the severe pain commonly associated with sciatica. This tingling or numbness may be felt by the person when he engages in some activities.

On this site you can find very good tips on how to treat your sciatica: http://curesciatica.toptips.org/

    I hope it helps
