What causes sprinkler systems hoses to break?

It seems like the automatic sprinkler systems under the ground often spring leaks. What causes this?

    The type of soil you have, the freeze table, the depth of the pipes and the fluctuations in the soil moisture content can all play a part in broken sprinklers....oh, and of course driving over the pipes.. :-/
