What is the best internship to get to prepare myself for an MD/MBA?

I'm a junior at an elite university, majoring in Economics, and I'm also premed. So far, I've done plenty of things on the medical side, and besides classwork, next to nothing on the economics side. I'm educating myself in Investment Banking and other finance fields over winter break to prepare for internship interviews in those fields. In general, I am applying for summer internships in finance (e.g. investment banking, asset management, insurance), consulting (healthcare or other), hospital (what types of internships do hospitals offer undergrads?), and pharmaceuticals/biotech/medtech. I plan on applying to medical school this summer, hopefully for a dual MD/MBA program. What type of internship, among those I just mentioned, would best prepare me for this path, and how can I make myself a competitive applicant for it? Thanks ahead of time for all your input!

I don't think most hospitals offer internships- most of them do have volunteer positions. You should definitely check out summer research programs offered by several hospitals that are specifically targeted at undergrads. They're a great way to get some experience in the lab, and with doctors and scientists. You can also get some amazing advice, references, and networking opportunities.

You should also look into the internships offered by the UN. They offer them at local offices as well as internationally, so you could apply to ones in Geneva, if you wanted to. Again, you learn a lot and you're in the company of society-changers.

As for business/economics, most banks offer internships for upper year students and new graduates. You should look around on various banks' and financial companies' websites to find out what they have to offer, and what the application process is like.

I don't know what a competitive MBA applicant looks like since I've never really looked into it. For med school, a competitive applicant has a high GPA (3.8+), a solid MCAT score (30+), amazing references/letters of recommendation, and a ton of extracurriculars.

    Best of luck!

What path, exactly? Maybe you just haven't explained why you want an MD/MBA very clearly here, but your target internships are all over the place in a way that suggests it might be beneficial for you to do what most MBA candidates do and work for a few years while you figure out whether you really need both degrees to get where you want to be in your career. If you're mostly interested in the finance side, for instance, it might make more sense to just find an MBA program with a concentration in health care management.
