I can't remember the title of this book and it is KILLING ME. It's about a witch adopting this girl?

Okay, I was randomly thinking about a book I read years ago when I was a kid and I can not think of the title to save my life.

Basically all I remember is that there is a little girl that gets adopted by a witch. But they don't outright say she's a witch, it just something people suspect. The witch is kind, she starts teaching the girl some magic stuff. At one point she gives the girl her own room but it's so big and far away that she has nightmares so she moves the room to her bedroom closet? And I think the little girl is covered in mud and taught how to fly? Someone definitely serves a brief stint in jail for suspected witchcraft. And I think it ended with watching a ship approaching from a cliff.

Sorry, it's been years. That's all I've got.

The only books coming to mind-from your short synopsis is-

"A Wrinkle In Time"- by Madeline L'Engele (I butchered the last name. Sorry)

And Possibly: "Timothy & The 2 Witches".

Btw, if you rented the book from your local Library, you might be able to ring them, ask if they have any records of books you've checked out & then see if it's on there....OR call the Help Desk for the Adult, Teens and/or Children's Library Section & give them your synopsis-they have more resources available-and usuallly a more extensive refference list. Last but not least, try your local Retail book store-ask for the employee that's the best at helping someone find books for people..when you go in take a copy of your question and add any other things that come to mind, ex: Character's names, the City/World it was set in, you get my point. Happy Book Hunting..(WHEN you find out the name of the book--re-edit your question to add the Title/Author so anyone interested will be able to check it out too ;) )
