Would you say the Beatles are overrated?
I like some of their work; but overall i would be reluctant to say that they were as a band any better than perhaps the beach boys. I am into 1950's music big time; and I think the Beatles owe 1950's American bands, a good deal of their style. What is the reason why most people credit them for being 'the best band' ever? Furthermore, why do they have so many hardcore idols still today, more so than say: Elvis Presley or Chuck Berry?

The Beatles owe a lot of their style to 1950s American bands, and they give credit to that.
Part of the reason people say they're the best band ever is because they had "so" many hits and were rather diverse. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is very different from "With a Little Help From My Friends," both of which are very different from "Come Together."
Elvis didn't write any of his songs, and with him and Chuck Berry, their songs sound more similar to each other; the opening riff of "Roll Over Beethoven" sounds a lot like the one from "Johnny B. Goode," for instance.
At least in my view.
Edit: There's probably also some "could have been" aspect to it; the Beatles broke up right at the height of their popularity, while Chuck Berry kind of faded away, and Elvis became an overweight, drug-addicted Vegas act in a white jumpsuit.
"We were just a band that made it very, very big, that's all." -John Lennon
Source(s): I love music from the 50s, too; but I also "love" the Beatles. But, some of my least favorite Beatles songs are the most popular. I don't especially like Hey Jude, Here Comes the Sun, Two of Us or the Long and Winding Road. - Jake No ChatLv 77 years ago
Some people overrate them, but they are still a popular group that did add a bit to the industry. I do not think they are overrated by average people. They have some great songs, some good songs and some mediocre songs. I am a big fan of classic rock, and The Beatles played a part in its history. Like you said, others including Chuck Berry, and many Blues musicians also played large parts too.

The Beatles do not have more fans than Elvis.Elvis is adored and has a massive fan base across South Eastern US. Elvis has sold more albums, charted more songs, spent more weeks on the Billboard and at # 1 and sold more singles than The Beatles. Likewise his music is more streamed on YouTube and his more recent posthumous releases have dominated.
I live in Southern US there are multiple statues and many things named after Elvis.

Their songs ?, John & Paul were the most successful pop songwriters of the 20th century, unless you were around at the time you can't appreciate how popular they were.

Yes. I don't care how good a band is, if you're considered "musically uncultured" for not liking them, they're overrated.
