US Citizens marrying abroad?

My fiance and I are both from Bulgaria, and we are both US Citizens through naturalization.

We are planning on getting married in July and since almost all of our family members are in Bulgaria we would like to have the whole wedding there, and maybe a small reception in the US when we get back.

We are wondering what the steps would be to transfer the marriage back to the US (including name change and status), considering technically she would have her last name changed in Bulgaria.

Thanks in advance

The U.S. recognizes marriages of U.S. citizens from most if not all European countries. However to be sure contact, and check with an attorney, to be sure that the marriage in Bulgaria is recognized in the U.S. You can also of course check with the nearest U.S. Consulates office before leaving, and they may know, and be able to advise you. However there is no such guarantee of a foreign consulate the U.S. are of knowing what the U.S. laws and transfer of a marriage the requirements for transfer for legal recognition. However an attorney who knows immigration, and foreign marriages for U.S. citizens would be your best way to find this out. If it's not recognized, or transferable, then a small marriage ceremony can be done by a mayor, magistrate, or judge, to make the marriage recognized. Which if so, will then require that a marriage license to be bought.
