if you're in a long distance relationship and you met online how long should it be until you meet?

I met my ex on myspace, and it turned out my mom was staying somewhere that was 2 hours away, and my ex lived 10 minutes from her, so we talked for a year, just making sure it was really him, and all that, so my friend and I stayed with my mom for winter break, and we decided to meet him at the movies, she went with em so I wasn't alone. so its good to bring a friend just incase, and so u can hear from a friend how she thinks ur relationship will go.

my ex met us, hugged me, ignored her, then he didn't even offer to pay to get me or her in, he just walked right in and said lets just go and not pay, so that looked bad. but me and her paid, then after movies we went to the store and he offered to buy me this beautiful necklace I said yeah, but then he tried to put it in hispocket,,and my friend just knew he was bad,,i didn't listen but god I wish I did, wasted 3 yrs,.
