Some people mean that the Titanic had a greater chance to stay afloat if they had gone head-on on the iceberg. It would have avoided to tear a long leakage along the hull, through many bulkheads.

Here is an interesting trivia: As you see the officer of the watch shouting "Hard to starboard!" to the helmsman, you see that he pulls the wheel to the left (port side). Some have reported that as an error in the movie but, actually, it was correct.

In those days, it was still the custom on ships to give orders, not as to a wheel, but to a tiller. In the old days of sailing ships, they had a tiller and you would push it to starboard in order to go to port side. So, the movie was absolutely correct!

Another trivia is that the radio operator sends a CQD morse signal before sending a SOS. This is also correct. Morse operators use CQ (seek you) as a way to obtain communication. CQD then stands for "seek-you distress." But in morse, it sounds like dadidadit dadadidat dadidit, which isn't very distinctive from other morse signals. It was then decided, previous to the sinking of the Titanic, to go over to another emergency signal, SOS. But it is not SOS, it is the signal didididadadadididit without interruption. It is a very distinctive sound in the ear of a telegraphist! It is only later that some decided to separate the nine signals to create the three letters S, O and S. And yes, the Titanic was the first ship to ever use this new convention.

Try watching a better movie. Say, one you don't already know the ending of.
