Can you tell me about kindles, nooks, tablets, etc?

I want to get my mom a kindle. She reads constantly but the numerous books are piling up. But she doesn't mess with games or anything like that. Basically she just needs something with books and maybe safari internet. I'm sure there's not anything with just that stuff but I really know nothing about stuff like this. I've never really messed with them. So can you please explain the differences between kindles and nooks and tablets and stuff like that? And which would you recommend for my mom? Also if you have a recommended place of purchase, feel free to add. Thank you!

No Safari. If think you need to buy an Apple device (like iPad) or w Windows device (like the Surface Tablet) to use Safari.

The best Kindle for reading is the Kindle Paperwhite.

It can connect to a Wifi network. You will want Wifi in the Kindle owner's house so the Kindle can connect to register and download the ebook purchased at Amazon. Warning - do not buy any books for it in advance since the books are likely to end up belonging to YOUR Amazon account. A Kindle can only be registered to one account at a time and can only read the Amazon Kindle books owned by that account. When you get the Kindle, de-register it (if Amazon registered it to you) and have your mom register it to HER Amazon account. It's more difficult/techy to get Kindle books without Wifi (unless you buy the pricy 3G Paperwhite). I recommend if her house doesn't have Wifi but has internet, add a Wifi router to her house's current internet service (either buy/add one yourself or as the internet provider if it would cost more to have them install a router with wired and wireless aka Wifi internet)

The browser in Kindle is a minimal black&white (like the rest of the device) mobile browser. eInk is for reading. It is a slow LONG-battery life monochrome display that is easy on the eyes (easiest with the Paperwhite). The charge in a Kindle eInk reader can last weeks. What eInk cannot do is show movies or animations. And the eInk ereaders have no audio hardware at all.

NOTE - there is a 3G Paperwhite that can visit the Kindle store, download ebooks from Amazon and search Wikipedia without a Wifi network, But you cannot use the the browser on 3G, only on a an existing Wifi network.

If your mother cares less about reading and more about movies, games, browsing, music etc., then you would need a color tablet like Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD or any Google-approved Android tablet or an iPad. But on these reading will be like reading on a computer screen (more straining vs eInk which is more like reading a book)

While it's true that some t.v. programs are better at informing and portraying than catalogs, literature in themselves are an escape. I personally would have a e book over t.v.
