What is causing this to happen on my Canon DSLR?

I was taking a photo of a Christmas tree, and noticed the black spots around the light. What causes this and how can I fix it?

I am using a Canon 60D at 18MP, and a Canon 55mm 1.8 lens.

I don't remember the exact settings, but I believe I was using a very wide aperture for this shot.

    Nice bokeh.

It's probably a dirty sensor or lens. I suggest you clean your lens and if that does not work, take your camera to a camera store and ask them to clean your sensor.

Dirt on or in the lens.

Are you using a filter? check that too.
