Catalan independence referendum?

The Catalan government is going to hold an independence referendum, with two questions:

1. Do you want Catalonia to become a state?

2. If yes, should that state be independent?

What will happen, if the people answer "yes" to the first question and "no" to the second question? What is a "dependent state"? How does it differ from the current situation?

What do Valencians, Balearans and Catalan speakers in adjacent regions think about the possible independence of Catalonia? Are the current administrative borders of Catalonia natural, or have they just been drawn in Madrid?

The European Union "threatens" Catalonia will not be a member of the union if it becomes independent. Do Catalans really see that as an obstacle? Are they Brussellists?

This won't happen (majority of votes "yes" and then "no") but I don't really know what would happen. A federal state which the two major Spanish parties don't want? Independence is the only solution.

Valencian and Balearic: those people there who believe in the Catalan Countries would want to join, but since most people there are against it, they feel envious and some people from those territories would surely exile and get the Catalan nationality, now that their regional Governments (I mean, Valencian and from the Balearic Islands) want to exterminate their Catalan language by making people believe that Valencian and Balearic are not dialects of Catalan but different languages (as if they said in the USA that their "American" language is not English).

The current boundaries of Catalonia are natural. Valencia and the Balearic Islands were conquered from the Moors and people by Catalans in the Middle Ages but later on they existed as confederal kingdoms.

"The European Union "threatens" Catalonia will not be a member of the union if it becomes independent. Do Catalans really see that as an obstacle? Are they Brussellists? " In my case, I'm not afraid of being outside the EU because I'm sure we would join after some years time. The UE and the economy in general will not be prepared to be without such a highly industrialized territory as Catalonia.
