Computer won't open file from email?

I'm applying to a program for school and the applications were sent through email.

I don't have Microsoft Word on my Macbook Pro so I attempted to open the file on my Sony VAIO, which DOES have word. When I go to save the file to my computer or download it, it says file was deleted because a virus was detected. I've tried multiple times and it won't let me download.

So I tried it on my moms VAIO. It doesn't detect a virus and let me download the file, but she doesn't have word to open the file. So this does me no good.

And on my Macbook, the file opens so that I can view it, but it won't let me edit the text and type the application.

So the one computer that WILL allow me to edit the text and type the application says that a virus was detected and won't let me download it!

Any way to get past this virus that's detected? The other two computers opened the file just fine, so why is this computer the only one detecting a problem?

One idea. Open a gmail account (or if you already have one, login to your gmail account). Send the file to your gmail email address. Open the file in Google Docs (or maybe it is called Google Drive now). Make your changes in edit mode. Save the file as a DOCX file.
